Setting Up XChat
From DarkGalaxy
IRC for Linux users (and non-comformist Windows users)
First download and install the newest version of X-Chat from www.xchat.org. When you open xchat, a window with the Title "Serverlist" will be shown. A free un-official build for windows can be obtained at www.silverex.org.
Add your personal information here - the only information that has to be accurate are the nicks and nick alternatives tho. To connect to the darkgalaxy IRC network, click on "Add" on the right side of the "Networks" list. Give the new network any describing name (Darkgalaxy or Chatspike for example). Then click on edit.
Double click on the entry "newserver/6667" and edit it to "irc.chatspike.net/6667". If you want to encrypt your connection, choose "irc.chatspike.net/6668" and remember it for later. If you want to connect to the Darkgalaxy IRC Chat on every start of the xchat program, enable the option to connect to the network on start "auto-connect on start" or something). If you want to encrypt your connection and choose "irc.chatspike.net/6668" earlier, enable the two lower checkboxes with the SSL options. Do not worry when enabling the "accept self-signed certificates" option - it's still safe on that network.
If you want to join special channels when connecting to this network, write them in the "channels" text field. If some of the channels are password-protected, use this syntax: "#passprotected1, #passprotected2, #chan1, #chan2 pass1, pass2".
If you already registered with nickserv, you can place your password in the corresponding textfield.
As most chat users do not use unicode-aware clients, change the charset to "ISO-8592-2 (Central Europe)" (this works for me at least).
When you finished your configuration, just click the "close" button, go to the server list, select the network you just created from the networks list and click "connect".
Now you should be connected to the ChatSpike network.
xchat usually has the same commands as mirc has. You can distinguish between operators, halfops, voiced users and normal users easily in xchat:
* operators = green dot on the left of their name (in the userlist) * halfops = blue dot * voiced = red dot * unvoiced/normal = no dot
