IRC

IRC is a chat program. It looks very simple, but it is more versatile and easier to use then MSN, ICQ, AIM, or any other system. Also, IRC is so incredibly basic that it will run on virtually any system and connection, so nobody is excluded from using it. IRC is a vital part of the game. It’s where all the most active players get together and form alliances, make their strategies, coordinate attacks and defence, spy on their enemies, and most importantly have a lot of fun. Together with the alliance forums, the alliance channels are the backbone of most of the top alliances.

The official channels of DarkGalaxy and TurnEngine are situated at the Chat Spike Network. As a consequence, most alliances have their channels on Chat Spike servers aswell. Whatever, you could also use any other server (e.a. quakenet).

This is a short tutorial on how to get started and how to use it in a smart and secure way. It is based on the Chat Spike network. Commands on other networks might be different.

Setting up and connecting to IRC

There are two main "flavors" of IRC Clients. Most everyone you will meet on IRC will be using one or the other of these clients... One being mIRC and the other being XChat. mIRC is "Everybody's IRC Client". It is the most easily used and most friendly to those just figuring the whole IRC thing out. The other client is XChat, some people regard XChat as a little harder to use than mIRC but once you get used to it you'll absolutely love it!

mIRC: For Windows. Easy to use. Click "mIRC Setup".
XChat: For Windows, Linux, Mac OSX. A little more advanced. Click "XChat Setup".

Registering your nickname

Now it would be a good idea to register your nick. You should do this to make sure that nobody else will use your nickname and so you can access secure channels. You can skip this step if you want to, but it’s not advised. In fact, if you ever want to join an alliance, you will have to register anyway.
To protect your nickname, ChatSpike uses a network service called NickServ. It will handle all the processes around securing your nickname, as well as a lot of other advanced features.
To register, type:

 /ns register <password> <email>

(leave the < and > out ofcourse) The email address has to be a valid one! An email will be sent here with an authentification code. NickServ will tell you about this.
In your mail, you will find instructions on how to confirm your registration. There's a command in there, it will look like this:

/msg NickServ AUTH <authcode>

NickServ will tell you that you are now registered. You are already logged in, but rom now on, every time you connect to chatspike you will have to login to NickServ.
To login, type:

/ns id <password>

NickServ will tell you that you are recognised. Do this every time before you join any channels, and you will be protected and recognised everywhere you go!

Let’s talk!

In IRC, it is very easy to talk in several channels at the same time. You can switch between these using the switchbar in the top. Almost every alliance has their own channels, and there is a number of official DarkGalaxy channels as well. Let’s join those channels first. Type:
/join #darkgalaxy

You are now in the DarkGalaxy main channel. On the left you will see a list of all the people in this channel. Be sure to say hi to us all!

The official Channels for the DG-community are:

  1. #ChatSpike : network-channel.
  2. #Darkgalaxy : The DarkGalaxy channel where we all hang out.
  3. #DG-help : If you want help, explanation or just some advice about anything related to DG.

At times, you will want to talk to somebody privately. To do this, just double-click a person’s name. A new channel will open, but this is just the two of you, nobody else can read this.
